Holstein Kiel will make its debut, making it the 58th Bundesliga club and the first club from Schleswig-Holstein. The club will also replace Hansa Rostock as the northernmost club in league history.[3]
FC St. Pauli returned to the Bundesliga after a thirteen-year absence.[4] For the first time ever, FC St. Pauli is playing in a season at a higher level than local rivals Hamburger SV. In addition, the city of Hamburg is back in the Bundesliga again for the first time since the relegation of Hamburger SV in the 2017–18 season.
