Hello Stephen It's me again[edit]

Hello Stephen, It's been awhile. Hope you are doing well and you are keeping safe. I would like to request the New Page Reviewer right. I was asked a while back by another reviewer to consider becoming one but I felt I needed to get my hands more into article creation. I think I am ready to help contribute to the community in another capacity. Hopefully I can ease the backlog. I await your response with thanks.

That discussion has been closed. I misinterpreted the guidelines for the permission that you have sought, and concur with the other admin's removal. Stephen
It is very rare that I remove bits from an editor. In this case, my best guess is that it was an oversight or otherwise innocent mistake and that you would fully support the removal. REVDEL Enquiry for Offensive Edit Summary[edit]

Hi @Stephen,

Do you think it would be appropriate to use REVDEL to remove this offensive edit summary? I'm not familiar with REVDEL but this seems to be an appropriate use of the tool under point 2 of the "Criteria for redaction" (Grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive material).

Don’t just revert for the sake of reverting[edit]

On the Olivia Newton-John page, you have been reverting my edit seemingly for the sake of reverting it. I did originally change the infobox picture to one from Newton-John’s main period of notability, which was reverted, and Polyamorph reached out to me on my personal Talk page about it. I made it clear that I wasn’t aware of the original Talk page discussion and suggested that a hidden note be added. Polyamorph agreed with the suggestion and added the hidden note. I modified the wording of the hidden note, which made clear that the image should not be changed without a Talk page consensus. That is what you have been inexplicably reverting without a justifiable explanation. Is that seriously what you want to start an edit war over, something as uncontroversial as this, which reinforces said Talk page consensus and which was actually thanked by Polyamorph? Of course it does. That's why Toyota pays lots of money to the league so its logo will be seen. I live in the city where that game is played. That’s why the article doesn’t contain Toyota in the title, nor does the main page mention the brand. I guarantee that no-one in the Toyota/league sponsorship discussions listed appearing at the top a Wikipedia page as a benefit, the advertising is from the association at the game. Consensus is actually against time frame on pics of deceased[edit]

I don't know why you insist that six month is required waiting time after death. Sorry, but the whole consensus lately or recently is against what you assert the waiting time to be. For what it's worth[edit]

To be honest, I'm still not 110% convinced that you did what they say you did, only because it just seems so out of character. But assuming for the moment that you did: I still appreciate the work you've put into the project over the years, especially all the thankless main page work, and hope you find a path (and a desire) to regain everyone's trust.

But, that said, what I *really* hope - against pretty harsh odds, I suppose - is that this is all some horrible misunderstanding.

I’m not aware that this is documented anywhere. I suspect it can be as much as a complete copy edit using obituary sources to as little as adding the date of death. I personally don't often check, and it’s a case of if the names are there when the item is posted they‘ll get the credit. It’s a minor thing at the end of the day. Regarding ITN talk page[edit]

Hi. Regarding this comment, I respectfully disagree; these candidates had already been tagged ready for multiple days and were due to roll off within a few hours. As such, the next step would be to leave a gentle reminder at the talk page to get attention (which did work). This is a position advocated by multiple other admins active in ITN. As you know, we don't have as many admins actively working ITN as we used to, particularly with RD, so the process has been getting backed-up recently. We’ve always suggested using tags on the nomination, Ready or Needs attention. As you say clogging up the talk with multiple transient nudges isn’t going to attract any more admins who weren’t already looking to work RDs from the bottom of the queue, especially those who drop by to post the big stories at the top.   • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

ITN[edit]

Hi Stephen. I'm new to ITN, and I'm wondering where I can find more information on the consensus surrounding the types of stories that won't go to ITN. I looked at the guidelines before nominating, which seem to indicate that geography shouldn't matter. For example, WP:ITN#Arguments to avoid states:

"Arguments about a story relating to a particular geographic region, country, ethnicity, people group, etc. are generally seen as unhelpful. Almost all news is of greater interest to a particular place and/or group of people than to the world at large, and arguing that something should or should not be posted, solely because of where the event happened, or who might be "interested" in it because of its location, are not usually met with concurrence from the community."

As I also mentioned, NYC is a very large city, and the fact that it's city politics as opposed to national politics, in my view, shouldn't make a difference. But, it appears that there's some consensus at ITN that I'm not aware of, so I'd be grateful if you could point me in the right direction so I can learn more. There are no hard rules, or a page that lists stories that will be accepted, rather it's a consensus that has developed over the years. Yes, New York is a world city, but a story of politicking within that city is not significant enough on the world stage. We wouldn't post local city/state politics about anywhere else in the world so we don't post them about the US. Thanks for your contribution though, and please look for more stories to nominate. I don't want to relitigate it by reopening my nom. As noted, I thought my nom was within the rules as specified at ITN (including the alleged community consensus RE the geographical scope of a story). The fact that it was not and everyone's response is just "that's how it is at ITN" feels a bit CABAL-ish. I think I'll bring my thoughts over the ITN talk page and try to make some suggestions from the perspective of an editor who is not regularly involved at ITN.   • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Sca's sanction[edit]

Reviewing the ANI thread, Sca's talk page, and the list of active editing restrictions, I see that Beeblebrox p-blocked Sca from WP:ITN/C. There wasn't any consensus in the ANI thread to topic-ban Sca from ITN as a whole, and I don't think Beeblebrox could have or would have imposed that sanction unilaterally. Stephen, you say that Sca is "banned from ITN". I'm not aware of any such sanction, but maybe you could point it out to me. I'm aware of the pblock from ITN/C, but a pblock does not prevent commenting about the sanctioned page. It's not a tban, with the "broadly construed" baggage. It's been almost a year since I was banned from ITN/C because of an ill-considered remark that was misconstrued by some as a racist/ethnic slur. As said repeatedly, nothing could have been further from my mind at the time. I am committed to equal rights and equal respect for all, regardless of ethnicity or LGBTQ identity, as can be seen from my user page.
In the interval, I've quietly continued involvement in other areas of Wikipedia, such as WP:FPC, and engaged in random copy-editing of articles I encountered, making about 700 contributions.
