Regarding your block[edit]

Unfortunately there's not much I can do a I don't know your IP number. There's a major bug in the system that causes registered users to be blocked when their shared IP is blocked (I get hit by this about once a week). In theory, blocks on shared IPs shouldn't last more than 3 hours. If you've been slapped with a longer block, please get back to me either via e-mail or my talk page, let me know your IP number (which should be displayed on the User is Blocked message) and I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, if your IP is used by a school I recommend you contact whoever is in charge and inform them that the behavior of some users is causing grief for others. Might be a good opportunity for an object lesson to be handed down to students. There's been more than one occasion in which the topic of banning school IPs has come up because kids get online and wreak havoc instead of doing serious work. Cheers. 23skidoo 20:27, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have been unblocked (though interestingly I noted you have been able to make edits today and yesterday ... I wonder how that's possible?). I do recommend you notify your IT people of this issue because the block was for 1 month and the next time around it could be a permaban (which can also be unblocked but I believe they require a bit of extra procedure). 23skidoo 21:01, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, in case you have not seen it, here is the [[User talk:168.184.220.4]|talk page]] for the IP. I really suggest you follow the request and contact the Orange County folks, otherwise it's pretty clear this IP will be banned permanently pretty soon. As it is I cannot guarantee my unblocking will actually remain as the administrator who did so is rather high up the food chain and may decide the block is in the greater interest of Wikipedia. 23skidoo 21:07, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

In the tradition of Wikipedia,

I give this barnstar to Mrfish33 for consistently outstanding contributions, expanding Wikipedia's coverage of Sharks, Zoologists, and China. Hansnesse 07:38, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great work! --Hansnesse 07:38, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just noticed this article that you started. The thing is, Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary, and I don't think the article is suitable for Wikipedia. -- ran (talk) 22:26, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. BTW I'd like to say what others have said before me: thanks very much for your contributions on China-related topics! Also, welcome to our little community of mapmakers! =) That map you mentioned at the WikiProject sounds really intriguing ... I wonder if you have it online anywhere?

Flora and fauna[edit]

Just start a new section... it should be fine. -- ran (talk) 03:37, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Question[edit]

Well, certainly looks like a stub to me... Nothing but basic facts like location, administrative region and local industry. Then again I don't have much experience with Chinese geography articles. Cheers. -- Миборовский U|T|C|M|E|Chugoku Banzai! 22:11, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pingxiang[edit]

We can put anything anywhere, and we can make a disambig page if we need one, of course. I'm afraid you'll have to explain to me what it is that you're asking me, though (I know nothing at all about Pingxiang; I came upon it only because someone tagged it for speedy deletion). Are there, in fact, two cities with the same name? If so, then yes, Pingxiang should be a disambig page and I'll have to move the current article somewhere else. If it needs to be moved to Pingxiang, Guangxi, then I'll have to do it (non-admins can't move pages over redirects if they have a history). If it needs to be moved somewhere else, then you can do it and then turn the resulting redirect from Pingxiang into a Disambig. If I should never have merged them in the first place, then let me know and I can undo it. Thanks for all your contributions, and let me know what you'd like to do. Chick Bowen 23:07, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now I get it! Sorry, I should have done some more research, or just figured you knew what you were doing and taken off that speedy delete tag. I think it's done: see Pingxiang, Jiangxi and Pingxiang, Guangxi. I've created a minimal dab page at Pingxiang; you should probably fill it out a little. Thanks again, and sorry for the confusion. China Rivers[edit]

I have a question about … the little explanation of the different parts of Changjiang [at List of rivers in China]. Should'nt there be something to explain that Yangzte, Changjiang, and Jinsha are different eyt the same? Just my opinion.Mike 19:26, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

That is very important information and I deleted it only before checking the Yangtze River page to make sure it was there. Since the page is only a list, I figured that detailed explanations and non-English alternate names should remain at the individual river articles. Just my opinion. AjaxSmack 06:37, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have an opinion on Chinese river name formats? There seems to be a plethora with some being called RIVER, some RIVER River, some RIVER He, some RIVERjiang, and some even RIVERjiang River. Has there ever been discussion of standardization?

AjaxSmack 06:37, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What I meant by Do you have an opinion on Chinese river name formats? was in reference to article titles. It seems that they are all over the place as noted above. AjaxSmack 00:51, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure whether we should go with the Chinese name with the Chinese word for river included, or with just the name and then river in English.Mike 01:09, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
I prefer RIVER River rather than RIVER He, RIVERjiang, etc. For non-Mandarin speakers and non-Sinologists it makes clear that the article is about a river and doesn't require knowledge of the various different Mandarin terms for river (e.g., He, Jiang, Shui, Xi). AjaxSmack 01:39, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I aggree... river name then "River". Do you think that since it's a list of rivers in China we should use the Chinese name and the international norm name too?Mike 01:55, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, parenthetically. Ideally would be something in chart form with English name, character name, pinyin transliteration, and alternate names in different columns but I wouldn't want to take on the job myself. AjaxSmack 02:00, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it's not worth having a separate section unless there are at least three or four sentences of material in the section. Headings break up the text and make it harder to read. The comparison with FishBase is not fair, because FishBase is a database, and Wikipedia is an encyclopedia: we're supposed to be writing articles, not just accumulating facts. However, there's much more to say about the species, so if you can expand any of the sections to a paragraph or two then I think it would be appropriate to restore the header. RE:Vandalism or just annoying[edit]

Well I think it's not vandalism but definitely disruptive editing. You made the right choice. Cheers. -- Миборовский U|T|C|M|E|Chugoku Banzai! 01:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]

If you look at the new category Category:Qing Dynasty generals, both of the old categories are super-categories of the new category, thus redundant.--Confuzion 21:04, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disappearing Lake in Laibin![edit]

Hi, Mrfish33!

I ran across this story in Google Earth and since you've done a lot of the work on Laibin in Wikipedia, I thought you'd like to follow up on it, perhaps adding to that article. Here's the link:

http://en.epochtimes.com/news/7-3-28/53431.html

It's ironic that you are also interested in icthyologists, as I share my name with one. My Wikipedia User Name is DaKine (and I am a bare beginner at Wikipedia) and my real name is Gordon Haas. There are several other people with that name and the one on the following page is an expert on anadromous fish:

Keep up the good work. Be bold!DaKine 03:49, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Qīngzhēn, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. China project[edit]

Hi, Mike--it's nice to meet you and thanks for noticing my work. I must say it's quite a shock to hear that the firewall has been relaxed. Whatever the case, take advantage of it. I'd say a glaring need is for 1) photos of China, and 2) for place names to be filled in. For example, there are many counties that have no articles. This could possibly be done by bot--which creates basic stubs really quickly for all the counties in a particular province--as was recently done for all of the Districts of Vietnam by a fellow editor from Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam.

For an example, see an article like Administrative Divisions of Shandong and you'll see all the redlinks.

We do have open tasks at Wikipedia:WikiProject China but most editors are lazy and don't do them. If you'd like to pick a project and go for it, in order to help properly document some aspect of China or Chinese culture, add it in the "open tasks" there and ask other editors for help. I think other editors will help if we can. Badagnani (talk) 07:12, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I usually don't like to delete information, but if you feel very strongly about the Beijing cuisine article, the dishes could be moved to a separate article. I think creation of county articles, etc. is more pressing, though cuisine articles are of course more interesting. Badagnani (talk) 05:48, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

China maps[edit]

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your kind appreciation. If these maps can be of some help for you, feel free to use them the way you want. Croquant (talk) 12:16, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice maps, Mike. I'll use them in my French WP articles. I don't need specific maps, but any one replacing the old maps of China will be welcomed. Thanks. Croquant (talk) 15:18, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Mrfish33! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 938 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
