Request reason:

I've come back to this account after a long time to find it blocked. I have nothing to do with the purported sock puppeteer. I'm just a guy and my edits are reasonable and not related to anything controversial. Please unblock me.

Decline reason:

"Hubris67" is unrelated to "TheNewHubris"? I don't think so. If that's true, however, you will have to explain why. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 00:58, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

Hi there, I've come back again to Wikipedia and have tried to fix a tiny typo on an article about a pretty good German general called Moltcke: "supervise" should be "supervised". Moltcke coined the phrase "battle plans don't survive the first contact with the enemy", or similar, which I was using in a work context. I then see that my account is blocked and my appeal (which consists of asserting that clearly no one has actually looked at my edits or has any basis for blocking me other than that my username is associated with a sock puppet campaign of a similar name) has been rejected without meaningful review. I was never aware of this decline response, so I didn't respond at the time. It's really hard to prove a negative. Why is the similarity of my username to a sock puppet network a reason for a block? I'm just a guy, my gamer tag has been hubris for decades, and 67 is the year that I was born (I'm old). My gamertag is "hubris" because I've always thought I was a better gamer than I am. Pride comes before a fall. My account and I have nothing to do with any sockpuppetry or anything at all that is negative or malicious. I'm a guy with a family and a business who loves technology - we run our own mediawiki instance in my business. So, please check my edits and then unblock me. I can't explain why my account is unrelated to whatever "TheNewHubris" is. It just isn't related and never has been. They share six letters. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ hubris (talk) 12:30, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Accept reason:

With consent of the blocking admin, I have lifted your block. Happy editing! Yamla (talk) 09:22, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jayron32: I actually think this explanation is plausible. The edits from this account look substantially different from those of the other socks. I've confirmed this username exists on at least one popular game-related service, created years ago (albeit years after this account). Checkuser data isn't particularly helpful in this case, but (unusually) I'm rather convinced by this explanation. I'll also note the block was approximately 15 years ago. What are your thoughts? --Yamla (talk) 13:05, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hubris67, note that the blocking admin is on vacation right now but will be back in a few days. Sorry for the delay. --Yamla (talk) 13:10, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Yamla and @Jayron32. At the risk of doxxing myself, I use various combinations of "hubris". On Steam I'm "hubris", my account name is "apc180967" which is my initials and birth date, including the "67". Steam ID is 76561197970151470. On Battle.net I'm "hubris #6441". My teenage boys use my Steam account because all of the VR games are in that account. Lately I just play COD on the battle.net account, but I don't have a lot of gaming time right now. I'm currently spending all my time using GPT-4 to help me write scripts to pull email classification data out of one system to train a machine learning model to classify emails for my business. I can assure you that I'm completely harmless :)
OK, checked with GPT-4 as to whether I'm harmless. As usual, it gave me an inconclusive but useful response: "As an AI language model, I cannot directly perceive or evaluate you as an individual. However, whether someone is harmless or not depends on their actions and intentions. It is important to strive for empathy, understanding, and kindness when interacting with others, as this can contribute to a more positive and harmless presence in the world." I reckon on that basis I'm probably pretty harmless. hubris (talk) 19:46, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Yamla:I have no memories of the block, and given that it's been this long, I think we can say that even if they are related WP:SO/WP:ROPE is more than sufficiently met. If you find their explanation plausible, and with to extend them WP:AGF and unblock this account, feel free to. --Jayron32 23:58, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
