Assessment Report[edit]

  1. Article needs to be expanded, still using Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements as a guide.
  2. It should make use of sections, using Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements as a guide. The presence of a "Trivia" section is best avoided.
  3. Some photos need to be added.
  4. References and Citations are crucial for wikipedia, and so these must be added as the article is expanded. Make sure that as many as possible are "in-line" citations.(See WP:References, WP:V, and WP:CITE for guidance.)

The Lakes and Fishing[edit]

So, are the lakes poisoned with lead, or what? Who knows for sure. Unless the claim can be swiftly verified, given that it is causing problems, I'm proposing to remove and issue strong warnings to anyone who adds the information back in without immediate verification.  DDStretch  (talk) 09:00, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kerry Catona?[edit]

Is she the one who use to be in the band Atomic Kitten? If she's not notable enough to have a page already in Wikipedia, then it's unlikely that she's going to be notable enough to be of interest now. Geoff Riley 22:44, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know who Kerry Catona (as it was entered) is. But I have just found out that if it is this person from Atomic Kitten, then the correct spelling of the name is Kerry Katona. The problem of names being removed is what happens when no attempt to verify or spell check one's additions is made. If someone would like to verify Kerry Katona's birthplace (and referencing another wikipedia article is not sufficient for this), then the name could be added, together with the appropriate verification and citation. Also note that the article really needs to be structured in line with recommendations listed in the assessment section at the top of this page: WP:UKCITIES (shortcut) i.e., no trivia section, and at least a Notable Residents section.  DDStretch  (talk) 22:55, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kerry Katona has never (to my knowledge as a long time resident) had anything to do with Lymm. There is one smallish (and now unadopted) pool at Heatley Flash which is believed to be lead poisoned due to the Hubert Jones works (now long gone) on its banks. It is unproven, but Sale and Warburton AC dumped it. Also the develovers of Heatley Mere were required to remove 20 feet of topsoil before building, because of this suspicion.

And finally, the stream which 'used to' run through the village? It still does. Via the dam and the dingle, and the slitting mill. No mention of Roman workings in either the dam or dingle. Because it contravenes several Wikipedia policies, all of which I've listed in my edit summaries:
  • because you haven't provided a WP:CITATION
  • because you haven't given any evidence for why you believe your club is WP:NOTABLE beyond your own opinion; I don't believe that it is important, even within Lymm: It's a local branch of a football supporters' club, of which there are hundreds, for multiple clubs in multiple places. I've nothing against your club, but if everybody promoted their local groups on Wikipedia, it would become unusable.
  • because it appears you are attempting to use Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia is not a directory.
All of these are contrary to Wikipedia's policies. People visiting the Lymm article are likely to want general information about the village of Lymm. They don't want to know about every minor society based there, and if they do want to know about your club, they would search for it. I imagine many towns and cities have Man City supporters clubs (same for Liverpool, Manchester United, etc.).
It's nothing personal: I have nothing against your club, and my knowledge of Lymm or otherwise is irrelevant. Wikipedia is not a free-for-all – the onus is on editors to learn and respect the policies. Please read WP:EDITWAR before editing further. Dave.Dunford (talk) 19:36, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
