Talk:List of capitals of multiple countries or territories simultaneously

And the page now exists, thanks to my fascination with Chandigarh and my quest for more like it. Hope it stays up - I assert that it is no more frivolous than List of countries whose capital is not their largest city.

For anyone who wants to add anything, please note that this page is only meant for places that are simultaneously the capital of two countries or territories at the same administrative level. Otherwise it would be inundated with national capitals that are also the capital of their own province, which is trivial. -- Minivet (talk) 19:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

London?

Would London be counted on this list, as it is the capital of the United Kingdom, as well as the constituent country of England, or does England no longer have a capital city per se?

Some problems

This list seems to include some cities which are capitals of a country and also of a first-order administrative subdivision (and maybe a second-order, and so on). We even include Oslo as it's the capital of Oslo. Hmm. This poses a problem: Almost all countries have subdivisions, and it's quite normal for the national capital to also be the capital of the surrounding region / province / district. So, if we actually tried to include such cities, we would have a very long (and somewhat redundant and also hard to maintain) list because most national capitals would be on it, and there would be plenty of scope for bickering over the corner cases.

And, hey, why not include cities which are simultaneously the capitals of first-order and second-order administrative divisions? There are dozens of them in the USA alone. If Bern can enter this list by virtue of a Swiss canton being a "territory", then why not add cantonal capitals which are also district capitals? Zürich, Lucerne, Altdorf, Schwyz, Solothurn, Sarnen...

Chandigarh is the capital of 2 separate teritories, i.e. 1 is not a subset of the other. When a capital city is also the capital of the surrounding regeon then the regeon is a sub set of the country that it is a capital of. If the qualification is that the 2 regeons must not overlap then the list may be usable. Op47 (talk) 10:52, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
