The births of three people named Derek Smart were registered in the West Riding of Yorkshire between 1920 and 1938, corresponding with a circa-1953→1960 playing career; Derek Smart (mother's maiden surname Corfield) registered April→June 1932 in Pontefract district (Most Likely candidate as initially played for Castleford), Derek J. Smart (mother's maiden surname Moody) registered April→June 1935 in Barnsley district, and Derek J. Smart (mother's maiden surname Gaskell) registered July→September 1937 in Leeds North district.
