Culture[edit]

Greetings, the "Culture" section of this article currently names:

a song that mentions Capel Curig in an unspecified way

a thriller novel set in the village for an unspecified reason

I added a mention of Capel Curig, as a place where one might paint a "portrait" of Snowdon. The mention is in Collingwood's Principles of Art and would seem to provide more information about the village (namely that it is beautiful for those who like mountain scenery) than those other two mentions.

Nonetheless, @Snowded: deleted my addition with the comment, "I really can't see that is relevant or notable." That may correct, but it would then seem to be a good reason to delete the whole "Culture" section.

In any case, I looked up Capel Curig, precisely because of Collingwood's mention of it. I hadn't known what it was. It could be of interest to readers of the article that Collingwood expected his own readers in 1938 to recognize a village of about 200 souls. David Pierce (talk) 08:55, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell me something about that norm: is there a page describing it? Meanwhile, sure, Collingwood didn't set out to write about the village as such; but the way he mentions the village says something about it anyway, like an illustrative quotation in the OED. The mention would seem to serve as evidence that touristic interest in the village for its mountain scenery dates back to the 1930s at least. Meanwhile, the song mention tells us nothing about the village, but serves only to promote the band, it seems to me. The mention of the Victor Canning novel tells us nothing of why a thriller might be set in the village; so that mention seems needless too. I would never have taken the trouble to add to the article, if what I had had to add had not seemed more pertinent than what was already there in the "Culture" section. Have a look at other village articles and you can see what the norms are. Collingwood is an interesting philosopher but he doesn't say something like 'the most famous view in Snowdonia" or similar, he just uses it as an example. The fact the Jim Perrin lives there is probably more notable, or that the Moel Siabod Cafe does the second best bacon buttie in the area. But none of those are really sourced. It really isn't a big issue, if other editors agree with you fine but I think it is irrelevant -----Snowded ^TALK 15:11, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
