Thị xã Bạc Liêu là thủ phủ của tỉnh Bạc Liêu. Lịch sủ Dưới thời Việt Nam Cộng hòa, thị xã này mang tên Vĩnh Lợi. Văn hóa - Xã hội Đất miền Hậu giang trù phú nên có nhiều phú nông. Dưới thời Pháp thuộc, nhiều gia đình hạng cự phú có con cái ăn tiêu phóng khoáng "thả cửa" nên danh từ "công tử Bạc Liêu" đã xuất hiện để chỉ giới dân chơi giàu có miền Lục tỉnh.

- The article was created at an ASCII title in 2004 and remained there until 2010.[1] The city has a brief entry in Britannica where the name is given as "Bac Lieu". Kauffner (talk) 13:54, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
