Shanty Days[edit]

The section on Shanty Days was deleted as a "commercial by shill" by 209.62.171.54. I disagree with this deletion — Shanty Days is the city's main celebration and is sponsored in part by the city. I do not consider the article as written a commercial by a shill, and I recommend it be restored. —Mark Mathu Jan. 1, 2006

I added a section on Shanty Days, Shanty Days is the biggest thing in Algoma every year, you can't have an article about Algoma without Shanty Days. This years attendance was 6000, that's almost the whole town. Superstarwarsfan 02:57, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correction. 6000 is twice the population of the town.

History[edit]

The History section says: "This was a loose translation from the Indian word An-Ne-Pe meaning 'land of the great gray wolf' ... In 1879, the city was formally renamed Algoma which is also an Indian name. Algoma means 'park of flowers.'"

The Wisconsin Historical Society translates the name Ahnapee as "when or at what time," and Algoma as "Snow-shoe" in Potawatomi. The name change was in September 1897.

I really can't see an 1879 date for the town's name chnage since the local Ahnapee & Western Railroad wasn't organized until 1892; certainly the name change ocurred after that.
