Note: This FAQ is only here to let people know that these points have previously been addressed, not to prevent any further discussion of these issues.
Q1: Why does this article state that the government of Afghanistan is the Islamic Emirate? Isn't that government unrecognized/illegitimate?
A1: Because reliable sources state that the Taliban have taken over. This determination is the result of a discussion among editors in this RfC. A new RfC (Request for Comment) will be required to change this. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia reflects reliable sources, which may not align with editors' own views on the matter. The threshold for inclusion of material in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. Wikipedia is not a place to right great wrongs, such as by determining and advocating the rightful government of a country based on international law.
Q2: The flag is wrong!
A2: Since the sole current government of Afghanistan is that of the Taliban, consensus in this RfC is to identify the current flag of Afghanistan as that of the Taliban. A new RfC (Request for Comment) will be required to change this.
Q3: Why is Afghanistan listed as being in both Central and South Asia? It belongs to only one of those!
A3: Different reliable sources include Afghanistan in either one macroregion, or the other (or in both) depending on the field of study and the perspective taken. This has been discussed many times before.

Location of error to correct: Section: Development of Taliban government; 3rd paragraph; 4th sentence. Change "... over an executive body known Supreme Council..." to "... over an executive body known as the Supreme Council..." by adding "known as" after "body". I read the discussions about the flag, and the shallow counter comments. However this is the point where we need to differentiate at least on a website between forced government and chosen one. This is case is still so fresh and the wounds of hundreds and thousands of afghans are still bleeding. I could count many other examples where articles on this platform were adjusted rightfully by morals and basic human senses. When we write about murders we write MURDERS even though the murder might state that he/she isn‘t one because we cannot accept whatever someone claims. We judge by their actions. Therefore the editors and creators of this post should not acknowledge a flag that stands for an organization that killed, r*ped and tortured so many people. While the people within Afghanistan cannot wish for their old flag we can at least represent them rightfully in a god damn article. The taliban are a terrorizing Organisation…please change immediately, I will not stop . Saly161616 (talk) 17:31, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then you should really support the reinstatement of the Islamic Republic. This has been discussed many times before, and we use the Islamic Emirate's flag because the Taliban is the government in power right now. Seizing control through terrorism doesn't change that, being unrecognized doesn't change that, and perpetrating war crimes don't change that. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 00:54, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But don’t you guys realize how this can affect, the victims ? I have discussed this with some citizens living in Afghanistan right now to also voice their opinions…and they are truly saddened by this. That the world outside Afghanistan where there are choices, rules and laws are still following the protocols given by a corrupt terrorizing group. I understand or I hope to believe that this flag on this site is only used for the reasons given and not any other political statement, but I find that this differs from many other cases…1. this case of Afghanistan in the way it played out has been one of the only one of its kind. Why are we comparing this to cases that played out before even one of us were born. Shouldn‘t this case be viewed individually? How can it so dryly and monotonously be categorized as FACT. We literally have witnessed a folk being stripped of its IDENTITY…this is shocking. There are so many factors that need to be considered. I really wish that the authors responsible for this article revalue their argumentations. I am sure anyone who is interested enough to open up the site of wiki of Afghanistan is well aware of its complications…so by putting up the old flag you don’t do nothing wrong but just view it from a different perspective, while using the new one is wrong on more than 100 levels Saly161616 (talk) 22:23, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You understand that “dryly and monotonously” collecting facts is Wikipedia’s whole modus operandi, right? The Taliban government is - in my opinion and those of many others, unfortunately - the government of Afghanistan. The facts on the ground would demonstrate that much. If you waved the tricolor around Kabul at present, I would be concerned for your safety. I, and I am sure that many others as well, sympathize with the fact that many Afghans both in and outside of Afghanistan do not believe that the Taliban represents them. However, just because a government is viewed as “illegitimate” by some people that does not preclude it from being depicted on Wikipedia. The Nazi government was, in the view of the modern German state, illegitimate. However, the fact remains that the Nazi Germany article does not show the present-day tricolor flag, but the swastika, as that was the flag that was flown by that government, legitimate or illegitimate as it may have been. I, again, sympathize with Afghans who disagree with their country’s Wikipedia article depicting the Taliban flag, but in my opinion, accurately depicting what flag is being used by the government presently in power in the nation should take priority over fears of traumatizing people. As if the corrupt puppet government the americans put in power was any better. At least the talibans are natives, not puppets of the west 2804:4FFC:423:ED00:650B:C000:2654:3B00 (talk) 13:19, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
