History[edit]

Pre-Formation: 1981-1986

The history of Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITS), originally Karunya University, began with a profound vision received by Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran in May 1981. He was divinely inspired to establish a technical university in India. This vision was reinforced during a visit to Jerusalem on July 20, 1984. At that time, Tamil Nadu did not permit private initiatives in professional technical education, but the policy shift in 1984-85 allowed for the establishment of self-financing engineering colleges, paving the way for Karunya.

Establishing the Vision * Official website

Following the reaffirmation of the vision in 1984, Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran, along with his son Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, began planning the university. They held a crucial meeting with experts, educationists, and supporters on October 28, 1984, at Hotel Connemara, Chennai. The meeting concluded with unanimous support for founding a private engineering college. Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran emphasized that the institution would be rooted in academic excellence, strong values, and spiritual power to serve humanity.

Overcoming Challenges * Official website

Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran faced significant challenges, including the state’s restrictive policies and the need for substantial financial resources. He relied heavily on faith and prayer to overcome these obstacles. He envisioned the university in a picturesque valley with verdant hills and waterfalls. Despite extensive searches across Tamil Nadu, the perfect site remained elusive until Rev. Paul from Elida Garden invited Dr. Dhinakaran to visit the Siruvani valley. Finding the Location

In 1984, the Dhinakaran family visited Nallurvayal village, which closely resembled Dr. Dhinakaran’s vision. This site, now known as Karunya Nagar, became the university's location. At that time, connectivity between Karunya Nagar and Coimbatore was poor, with minimal infrastructure. Over the years, developments such as bridges significantly improved accessibility.

Official Recognition and Launch * Official website

On August 7, 1985, the Government of Tamil Nadu granted permission to start Karunya Institute of Technology (KIT) under Chief Minister Shri M.G. Ramachandran’s administration. The condition was that the institution would impose no financial burden on the government. Preparations were completed for the 1986-87 academic year, allowing KIT to admit 60 students each in Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication Engineering.

AICTE Approval and Early Development * Official website

On December 18, 1990, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved KIT to conduct engineering courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication Engineering. Conditions included appointing qualified staff, creating an endowment fund, enhancing the library, and procuring quality equipment.

Acquisition of Land * Official website

Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran’s father, Shri Duraisamy, played a crucial role in acquiring land. Negotiations with landowners in the Siruvani valley resulted in securing 150 acres by October 1986. Shri Duraisamy, affectionately known as 'Thatha' or 'Father Duraisamy,' was instrumental in these efforts.

Inauguration and Early Years * Official website

Karunya Institute of Technology was inaugurated on October 4, 1986. The initial years saw the establishment of several engineering and non-engineering courses. The first batch of students graduated with notable achievements, including several university ranks. By 1995, Karunya was recognized as the best engineering college by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Expansions and Milestones * Official website

Between 1986 and 1999, Karunya introduced new courses, including Master's programs in Computer Applications and Business Administration. Collaborations with industries, such as an MoU with Roots Industries, Coimbatore, were also established. In 1998, Karunya achieved several significant milestones, including permanent affiliation for key courses and UGC approval for central assistance.

Path to Deemed University Status * Official website

In 1999, Karunya Institute of Technology was granted autonomous status by Bharathiar University. The institution continued to grow, introducing new programs and gaining various accreditations. Efforts to attain 'Deemed University Status' culminated in 2004, when the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, declared Karunya a Deemed University.

Legacy and Growth * Official website

Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran’s vision and efforts were pivotal in shaping Karunya into a premier institution of higher learning. After his passing in February 2008, Karunya continued to thrive under the guidance of his son, Dr. Paul Dhinakaran. The university focuses on addressing pressing issues in Water, Food, Healthcare, and Energy through innovative research and community outreach. Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences has grown from a humble beginning with 180 students to an institution with thousands of students, emphasizing research and development. The university's mission is to solve humanity's pressing problems through technical education, research, and service, staying true to its name, which means 'Compassion.'
