Unorthodox Reviews was founded in 2016 by Philip Edusei and Godwin Mitchual.[2][3]
Mission[edit]
Unorthodox Reviews produces content about African music and other art forms. They also provide comprehensive music reviews, and analyze of segments of African music such as afrobeats and amapiano by interviewing the musicians behind the music. In 2020, Audiomack signrd a partnership with Unorthodox Reviews to extend it's coverage of African music and Afrobeats. [4][edit]
Impact and Reach[edit]
Unorthodox Reviews is a recognized voice in the promotion of African music[5].
During her interview with Unorthodox Reviews, Amaarae described herself as an afro-fusion artist, referencing the drum arrangements in most of her songs in her debut EP "Passionfruit Summers.[6] This was quoted in a HipHopDX[7] review of her second studio album "Fountain Baby"[7]
Other online platforms including The Native, HipHopDX, Rap TV, OkayAfrica, More Branches and Ameyaw Debrah have referenced stories and quotes from interviews by Unorthodox Reviews in their coverage of Afrobeats and African music.
