Tulmulla or Tullamulla Khirbhawani is a notified village,[1]tehsil[2] and post office[3] located 5 kilometers away from Ganderbal town in the Ganderbal District of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

History[edit]
Tulmulla has a rich historical significance, dating back thousands of years. According to Kalhana's writings, the sacred spring of Tula Mula is situated in a marshy ground. Legend has it that floods inundated the spring and temple in ancient times. Yogi Krishna Pandit Taploo of Bohri Kadal, Srinagar, had a dream in which the Goddess appeared to him and directed him to the location of the holy spring.[4]Abu'l-Fazl ibn Mubarak, in his book Aini-Akbari, mentions the area of Tula Mula extending over a region of hundred bighas (unit of land area), which used to sink in the marshy lands during the summer season.[5]
Geography[edit]
Tulmulla is situated in a picturesque location amidst the breathtaking beauty of Himalayan mountains of the Kashmir Valley. It is characterized by its lush green surroundings. The town is located along the banks of Tulmulla Nallah, locally known as Nagpaav. The presence of the nallah adds to the natural charm of the area and contributes to the fertility of the surrounding land.[6]
Demographics[edit]
The total geographical area of Tulmulla village is 799.3 hectares. As of the latest census, Tulmulla has a total population of 7,240 people, out of which the male population is 3,770, and the female population is 3,470. The literacy rate of Tulmulla village is 52.62%, with 63.69% of males and 40.61% of females being literate. There are approximately 1,198 households in Tulmulla village. The demographic composition of Tulmulla reflects a harmonious coexistence between Hindu and Muslim communities.[7]
Administration[edit]
Tulmulla tehsil is located within the administrative jurisdiction of Ganderbal District in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Within Tulmulla tehsil, Nayabat Sherpathri serves as a sub-district administrative unit. Nayabat Sherpathri oversees the governance and development of Tulmulla and surrounding areas. It plays a crucial role in coordinating administrative functions and implementing government policies at the sub-district level, ensuring the welfare and progress of the area.
The current Tehsildar of Tulmulla is Mr. Javaid Ahmad Zargar, who oversees the administrative affairs within the tehsil, including Nayabat Sherpathri. Assisting the Tehsildar is the Naib Tehsildar, Mr. Rafeeq Ahmad Wani, who plays a significant role in managing day-to-day administrative tasks and public service delivery.[8]
Landmarks and Attractions[edit]
One of the prominent landmarks in Tulmulla is the revered Kheer Bhawani Temple, also known as the Ragnya Devi Temple. Dedicated to the goddess Ragnya Devi, the temple is a sacred pilgrimage site for devotees. Every year, the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims who visit to seek the blessings of the goddess and participate in religious rituals and festivals.[9]
Other significant landmark include the Central University of Kashmir.The Central University of Kashmir, located in Tulmulla, is a prestigious educational institution offering a wide range of academic programs and contributing to the intellectual and cultural development of the region.[10]
The Shrine of Baba Mir Syed Hyder (Mercy of God on Him) is a hub for Muslim devotees, who celebrate an Urs (annual festival) every year in honor of the revered saint. The shrine holds religious and cultural significance for the local Muslim community, attracting devotees from far and wide.[11]
