Sumit Roy (born 18 August 1981) is an Indian screenwriter and director who primarily works in Hindi films. Based in Mumbai,[1] Sumit has written scripts for Bollywood productions such as Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani[2] (2023) and Gehrraiyaan (2022). Additionally, he has lent his talents to television serials including Sumit Sambhal Lega (2015) and Chandragupta Maurya (2011).[3]
Sumit received two nominations for the 2023 Filmfare Award for Best Story and Best Screenplay for his work on Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani.[4][5]

Sumit was born in 18 August 1981 in Delhi.[6]
Career[edit]
Sumit started his career as a managing partner at Kriya Communication, New Delhi where he wrote and directed documentaries, short films and brand films.
His documentary Capital Water (2006) delved into the politics of water privatisation in Delhi and won First Prize at the DHAN Foundation film festival.[7] [8]
His short film Dancing Queen (2007) garnered love and accolades from all over the world including first prize at the Sardinia Film Festival (2008)[9] [10], Cortofonino Film Festival, Italy (2008) [11] [12] [9] , Redbull Vibrations Contest on filmaka.com (2008)[13]. It was also selected as India’s nominee for the Pangea Day global simulcast - a worldwide television event based out of Los Angles, California (2007) [14][15][16][17]
Moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in Hindi feature films, Sumit was selected as one of the finalists of SANKALAN, India’s first script lab mentored by Anurag Kashyap, Sriram Raghvan and Anjum Rajabali.[18] [19] [20]
Subsequently, Sumit embarked on a successful career as a screenwriter, writing more than a thousand episodes for Indian television across genres. These included hit shows like the historical Chandragupta Maurya (2011), the sitcom Sumit Sambhal Lega (2015) (an Indian adaptation of Everybody Loves Raymond), the drama Aasman Se Aage (2012) and the science fiction adventure Time Machine (2015).[3][21]
In 2019 he wrote Takht for Karan Johar (Dharma Productions), an epic historical set in the Mughal era which is to star Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Anila Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Bhumi Pedenkar, Jhanvi Kapoor. The project is currently in pre-production. [22] [23][24] [25]
Gehrraiyaan[26], a romantic drama written by him for director Shakun Batra (Dharma Productions) starring Deepika Padukone, Sidhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Pandey released in 2022. It went on to become the most streamed Hindi film of the year on Amazon Prime Video.[27]
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023),[28] a romantic comedy family drama written by him for Karan Johar starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan was a critical and commercial success grossing more than ₹355.61 crore (US$45 million)[29] [30] [31]at the global box office and picking up seventeen Filmfare nominations including two for Sumit for Best Story and Best Screenplay. [32] [33]
Sumit has also written Showtime (series),[34][35][36] an original drama about the inside working of Bollywood, created and written by Sumit will release on Disney+ HotStar in March, 2024.[37][38][39]
Besides screenwriting Sumit also writes for publications. His essay ‘Together/Apart: In Food and Film’ (for enthucutlet.com) was adjudged one of the best pieces of food writing in 2023 by Indian Culinary Agenda.[40] [41]
