Molly Clare Roberts (born 23 March 2000) is a Welsh singer-songwriter from Cardiff.[1]
Her debut single, "Wings To Fly," was recorded at Fieldgate Studios in Penarth and was released on 9 April 2022.[2]
Early life and education[edit]
Roberts grew up in Roath Park and attended Howell's School, Llandaff from the age of 11 after being awarded a music scholarship.
She studied English Literature and French at the University of Exeter and completed a Master's Degree in Songwriting and Production at Tileyard Studios in London.[3]
Roberts started performing at the age of 9 and began competing in local music competitions and festivals around Cardiff.[4]
In 2014, Roberts was one of 6 songwriters to be selected to appear on Gareth Malone's The Big Performance, a 6-part series on CBBC.[5]
Artistry[edit]
Roberts is inspired by 'the songwriting greats' and cites Joni Mitchell, Carole King and The Beatles as her main influences. Growing up in Wales and being surrounded by music had a significant impact on Roberts' music and vocal style.[6]
Her sound has been described as 'honest, melancholic and effortlessly beautiful'.[4]
Career[edit]
Roberts received her first national radio play with her single "Before," which was added to BBC Radio Wales A-LIST and received its first play on Wynne Evan's morning show in October 2022.
The single was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire.
Roberts also debuted the single on the YouTube channel Mahogany Sessions, where it garnered more than 150,000 views overnight.[7]
She then began co-writing with Grammy-award winning songwriter Amy Wadge at her studio in Pontypridd. Wadge has co-written tracks with Ed Sheeran, Diana Ross and Pink including 'Thinking Out Loud' for which she won the 2016 Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
In March 2023, Roberts uploaded a video on her Instagram account playing her single "Goodbye" to Wadge; the video received upwards of 1.8 million views. Later that year, Roberts performed at the Euro Games which was held at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in front of 12,000 people and her performance was broadcast live on Channel 4 Sport.[8]
On 1 March 2024, she headlined her first European festival, 'Sous le Radar' in Paris at Point Ephémère.[9] Roberts was announced as support act for Australian artist Cap Carter on the UK leg of his EU tour in June 2024.[10]
