Deryk, the atmospheric electronic pop venture of Madeline Bradley, draws its name from her esteemed accordion-playing grandfather. Hailing from London but now rooted in Auckland, Bradley embraced the pseudonym around 2018, embarking on a sonic journey realized with the production prowess of Justyn Pilbrow. Under Pilbrow's guidance, Deryk's ethereal soundscapes materialized, reminiscent of luminaries like Lorde and James Blake.
Born in 1999, Bradley's formative years were spent amid the vibrant energy of South London. At eight, her family relocated to the coastal Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. It was here that Bradley's affinity for storytelling, cultivated through her passion for writing short fiction, seamlessly fused with her musical aspirations. Influenced by the emotive resonance of Linda Perhacs, Julee Cruise, and Laurie Anderson, Bradley began translating her narratives into soul-stirring compositions. Her talent garnered recognition when her track “Gypsy Home” debuted on a 2012 Lion Foundation compilation under her birth name.
Following a year of design studies in Wellington, Bradley's devotion to music eclipsed all other pursuits, prompting her relocation to Auckland. Immersed in the city's vibrant music scene, she delved into the intricacies of music production, eventually enrolling at SAE Institute Auckland. While her cover of Spooky Black's "Without You" garnered modest online attention in 2014, it was her encounter with Trieste Douglas that marked a turning point. Despite several years of collaboration with various artists, Bradley struggled to define her distinctive sound until she collaborated with Pilbrow. From May 2019 to January the following year, they meticulously crafted material for her debut EP. Leading the charge was the mesmerizing single "Call You Out," paving the way for the release of her debut EP, WOMb, in October 2020. The release of her self-produced and written single ‘Brains’ came out in December of the same year.
