Draft:2024 Texas border dispute

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In March 2023, Gregory Wayne Abbott, who is the governor of Texas since 2015, declared on X that the Texas National Guard will establish more than 60 miles of wired barrier along the US-Mexican border because of a wave of illegal immigrants.[1]. In July, the National Guard started installing further protections against river crossing. Later in January, the Supreme Court agreed on sending federal authorities to remove the barrier, creating tension between them and Texas. Representative Clay Higgins for Louisiana's Third Congressional District compared the situation to an upcoming civil war on his X profile[2]. On the 26th of January, a TikTok user @gator_4.0 with over 96.9K followers published a video with a working military tank with a reference to the conflict, quote "Gov. Abbott is about to close the Texas Border"[3], however this statement is still to be confirmed.

Timeline[edit]

Reactions[edit]

Biden Administration sued[4] Texas governor over anti-immigrant river buoys among humanitarian concerns and lack of Texan permission to install these. On January 13th, Representative Henry Cuellar accused Texas of allowing children to "drown in the river" in response to the death of a mother with two her kids[5] The Supreme Court stated that they allow federal authorities to continue removing the wire. Donald Trump called other Republican governors to support Texas, and some of the states sent some of their National Guard to help Texas if the conflict will escalate.
