Tip of the Day[edit]
Tip of the moment...
What are portals? "Doorways to knowledge." Wikipedia's coverage of subjects can be extensive (mathematics, for example, is covered by tens of thousands of articles on Wikipedia). Portals are an alternative entry to a subject (besides its main article), and to that subject's coverage in the encyclopedia, in a way similar to how the Main Page provides sample fare from Wikipedia as a whole. Portals may include features such as Selected article sections, Selected image, news, points of interest (Did you know?, Anniversaries), and links to related Wikimedia. Portals are more diverse than the Main page, and may include features such as panoramic banners, slide shows, category trees, topics lists, and whatever else portal designers can come up with. A secondary purpose of portals is to provide bridges between reading and editing, and between the encyclopedia and the Wikipedia community. They may provide links to the related WikiProjects, Wikipedia's Reference desk, and so on. Portals are a hybrid between encyclopedia pages and project pages, and occupy their own special namespace, the Portal namespace. Therefore, all portal titles are preceded by the prefix "Portal:" The list of all completed portals is Portal:Contents/Portals. A list of all portals, including those under construction, can be found at Category:All portals. The Portals WikiProject is dedicated to collaboratively building and maintaining portals, and further expanding on the Portal concept, such as with automated features, and is always looking for new participants. – – Read more: To add this auto-randomizing template to your user page, use {{totd-random}}

Tip of the day...
Look before you leap
Before you write a new article from scratch, please do a search to make sure you are not creating a duplicate of an article that already exists. Following the naming conventions can help avoid this problem. – – Read more: Wikipedia:Your first article See also: Wikipedia:Content forking To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd3}}

The Tip of the Day project provides a different piece of advice for using Wikipedia every day. Like the Picture of the Day, you can include it on your userpage by adding {{totd}} somewhere (at the top of your talk page is a good place for it). The randomized version (displayed above) is {{totd-random}}, and shows a different tip each time it is displayed on your screen. Other formats for the TOTD exist, such as the more compact {{totd3}}, or you can make your own by including {{Wikipedia:Tip of the day/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} on your userpage (which includes the raw text, without any formatting) and then enclose it in your own formatting. To float the tip of the day to the right of content (as it is displayed here), place this code where you want the tip to show up: {{right|{{totd3}}}}.
Style tips[edit]
A spin off of the tip of the day, this is another template that provides useful instruction a little at a time.

Dashes in article titles
When naming an article, don't use a hyphen as a substitute for an en dash that properly belongs in the title, for example in Eye–hand span. To aid searching and linking, provide a redirect from the corresponding article title with hyphens in place of en dashes, as in Eye-hand span.
Add this to your user page by typing in {{Styletips}} |
To place it on your userpage, copy and paste this:

Pics and images[edit]
There is a huge selection of pictures on Wikipedia and its sister site Wikimedia Commons. Pictures can be a powerful way to express yourself...
Pictures can be found all over Wikipedia, but it can be very time-consuming to hunt for them in the encyclopedia's articles. Another option is to browse Wikipedia's collections...

Picture(s) of the day[edit]
The Picture of the Day, which changes daily, is currently displayed every day on the Main Page, and you can use it to decorate your userpage as well...

The martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) is a large eagle native to sub-Saharan Africa. A species of the booted eagle subfamily (Aquilinae), it has feathering over its tarsus. One of the largest and most powerful species of booted eagle, it is a fairly opportunistic predator that varies its prey selection between mammals, birds and reptiles. It is one of a few eagle species known to hunt primarily from a high soar, by stooping on its quarry. Currently, the species is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This martial eagle was photographed in the Matetsi safari area in Zimbabwe.

If you'd rather have it without the text (to make it smaller), you can use {{Wikipedia:POTD/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}_{{CURRENTDAY}},_{{CURRENTYEAR}} instead.
