Core teams and challenger teams?[edit]

I don't understand the concept with 12 nations being core teams. Why are those teams always qualified by default? It seems extremely strange to have that system on a national team level. I have never heard of it in any other sport, that some nations are always qualified by default and can never be relegated, no matter how bad they are.

Can somebody explain this to me? Fomalhaut76 (talk) 07:58, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's been the format of the tournament since the establishment in 2018 and it replaced the now both defunct tournaments—FIVB World Grand Prix (women) and FIVB World League (men)—but there's a rumor that core & challenger teams will scrape or the format will revise in 2025 edition. ♒️ 98TIGERIUS 🐯 05:50, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer. I still don't understand, however, how it was possible in the first place, that the FIVB members accepted this rule. "Hey, we're making this tournament where all nations might take part, but some nations are more equal than others, so you 200 members will fight for only 4 spots. That's fair, right?"
That's what my problem with this issue is, that there needs to be some sort of explanation for how the rules can be as they are ... Fomalhaut76 (talk) 11:56, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pools - how are they stablished?[edit]

the current explanation for the pool phase is insufficient. There's no such thing as 2 different pools! There are 3 different weeks of competition for which the 16 teams are divided in 2 pools of 8 each week (that is 6 pools overall!). Not clear to me though how the FIVB decides on the pools repartitions and on which team faces which team each week. 213.57.21.226 (talk) 13:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Query about this article's title[edit]

Pardon my ignorance about which naming convention this article's title invokes as its model, because I'd like to ask this: why does this article's title place the modifier "Women's" inside the league's name (Volleyball Nations League), cutting that or through that league's name, instead of simply before the league name. In short, why "Volleyball Women's Nations League" instead of "Women's Volleyball Nations League"? After all, that modifier is there to tell readers that this article refers to the women's VNL (or that it's not about the men's VNL). As it is, the current title with its modifier placements is telling readers that the article is about the women's NL in FIVB Volleyball.

The article body content nowhere tells us that "Volleyball Women's Nations League" is the official phrase for the women's league competition. On the contrary, it is repeatedly referred to as the women's VNL.

I'd pose a corresponding similar question about the article title for "FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League", and, consequently, "2024 FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League", and so on. Bagoto (talk) 21:32, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: moved. This should be a direct move as consensus is met and there won't be any opposition. Fwiw, this is not premature close. (non-admin closure) Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 02:22, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

– Misplaced gender modifier. Per WP:UCRN, all cited sources in these articles refer to the events as either the women's or men's VNL, not the VMNL or VWNL. Bagoto (talk) 23:52, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, 98Tigerius, they should be. Bagoto (talk) 11:53, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, per this, your addendum, I posted the necessary additional multiple-page move request at the Talk page of "2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League". Bagoto (talk) 15:14, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
