Looking Southeast? Or, as it appears to me, Southwest?

Agreed! As soon as I saw the "in article" small version and read the caption I thought to myself, "Uh, that does not make sense." When I clicked the image to see a larger version I thought, "Yes, this image is DEFINITELY facing SouthWEST." Look at any map. If you are standing near the tip of Gibraltar facing SouthEAST with Africa in your field of view on the right, you are NOT going to be able to see any part of Europe on the left without rotating your head and thus losing sight of Africa.
