Summary

Description
English: Small three dragons in mahjong

A xiao san yuan winning hand consists of two pongs and one pair of the dragon suit. This picture depicts a xiao san yuan with a pair of FA.

Notice that if the 2-3-4 myriad were replaced with a pong of any kind, this would also become a dui dui hu. i.e. xiao san yuan and dui dui hu score independently. In some extremely aggressive scoring rules used in Hong Kong, each additional point doubles the winning with no upper bound. A dui dui hu counts for 3 points, i.e. there is a 8 folds difference (23) in the winning by just replacing one meld. Some expert players would rather discard the 2-3-4 myriad meld to wait for a pong instead. In other scoring systems, such as the Taiwanese, each point only wins one extra chip. In such situation, there will be no incentive to discard melds that are already well formed. The difference in scoring determines the playing strategy. Many players using the Hong Kong scoring system would refuse to take small winnings in order to wait for a big one that could win in 128 folds or more.
