Die Domkirche wurde von 1837 bis 1840 im Auftrag von Miloš Obrenović nach Entwürfen der Architekten Franz Jancke und Friedrich Adam Querfeld in klassizistischem Stil mit spätbarocken Elementen errichtet. Sie ist dem Erzengel Michael geweiht. In der Kirche wurden die Reliquien des heiligen Zaren Uroš und des heiligen Despoten Steva Štiljanović zur letzten Ruhe gebettet. Hier befinden sich auch die Grabstätten kirchlicher Oberhäupter und serbischer Herrscher aus der Obrenović-Dynastie (Miloš, Mihailo und Milan). Vor dem Hauptportal wurden zwei große Persönlichkeiten der serbischen Kultur beigesetzt: Dositej Obradović und Vuk StefanovićKaradžić.
