DescriptionAgios Athanasios, Ancient Macedonian Tomb - II (36979099971).jpg
This small single-chambered Macedonian tomb is located at the center of an enormous tumulus, 12m down its peak. It façade is richly decorated with murals preserved in excellent condition featuring surprising colors. This exceptional monument is dated to the last quarter of the fourth century BC.
Dominating the center of the pediment is a large luminous disc flanked by two winged griffins that touch as cautiously with one foot. Below the painted pediment are deep blue triglyphs and white metopes, but the surprise waits lower down, on the narrow frieze above the doorway, where a symposium scene unfolds. A representation so familiar from descriptions in ancient texts and corresponding vase paintlng but unique on the thematic repertoire of funerary monuments m Greece,
